Sean David Burke
Sean is the other side of fifty, native to Perth, Australia, and of Irish, Italian, Scottish and Croatian stock. He attended catholic schools and UWA and went on to become a lawyer before turning to teaching.
In 1997, Sean went to Melbourne to train as a Steiner/Waldorf primary class teacher. He worked in that role at West Coast Steiner School in Nollamara and Silver Tree Steiner School in Parkerville for seven fascinating years. Sean has recorded some of his successful strategies and ideas in his books, Lighting the Literacy Fire and Poems, Songs and Plays for the Primary School.
In 2006, Sean then completed a Grad Dip Ed at Murdoch University, with the further intention of becoming a high school drama teacher. Those plans were interrupted by a relief day at Cyril Jackson Senior Campus in 2007 when he met a class of astounding and energetic ESL students and a dedicated staff. For the following seven years, he worked mainly in adult and secondary ESL, both in Australia and overseas, as well as in prison and at two universities.
In 2010, Sean was elected by state school teachers to the board of the West Australian College of Teaching, served on that board’s Professional Conduct Committee and trained as an AITSL initial teaching course assessor.
From 2015 to 2020, Sean worked across various subject areas at Communicare Academy, A CaRE school in Kenwick, WA. In 2019, he published Wonderful English: A Treasury of English Pronunciation, and, in 2020, the Wonderful English Teacher's Book.
Sean lives in Perth, Western Australia with partner, Andrea, and they enjoy their now adult children, Tom, Genevieve and Bonnie. He is active and interested in the education policy debate in Australia and internationally, and an avid reader of educational philosophy and history. His interests include travel, politics and shorewalking.
